Cathy Thomson, MD Orthopedic Hand Surgeon |
| Cathy B. Thomson,
M.D., is a successful orthopedic surgeon who traded her scalpel for a
pen. Dr. Thomson chose a new venture that allows her to utilize her
medical expertise in a very different setting that still requires
medical skill, extensive knowledge and true compassion as a consulting
expert.
Her achievements and accomplishments includes a B.S. from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va., a medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in Charlottesville and a long list of impressive firsts in her specialty field of orthopedic surgery. Dr. Thomson continuously demonstrates a propensity for forging ahead against all odds, as the first woman to graduate from an all male medical school, the first woman to do a residency in general surgery and neurosurgery at the University of California, San Diego, and the first woman fellow in hand surgery with the Louisville Hand Group now known as Kleinert and Kutz in Louisville, Kentucky. Dr. Thomson is vigilant in her case reviews and solid and unwavering in her opinions. She states her position clearly, concisely and thoroughly. She loves being a physician in a consulting capacity. It allows her to continue to care for patients far beyond the traditional health care setting while diligently affecting positive outcomes. Having been an assistant professor and clinical assistant professor at the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at the University of Miami School of Medicine, Dr. Thomson has an innate ability to teach. She is exciting and passionate about her teaching not only medical students, interns and residents, but nurse consultants, lawyers and mediators. Dr. Thomson runs a consulting business where she serves as a non-testifying expert. She does everything a legal nurse consultant-does and should be doing. Dr. Thomson has taken and taught the Certified Legal Nurse Consultant's (CLNC) courses-different from other doctors involved in consulting. Her three years as lecturer at their annual meetings gives her a huge advantage over any other doctor who could just lecture about the topic-who hasn't applied the knowledge to helping attorneys and teaching LNCs first-hand. Unlike any other doctor, Dr. Thomson worked full time for two years in a large prestigious plaintiff (17 attorneys) law firm as a consulting physician. This is where she learned the “tricks of the trade” in a “trial by fire” way! This was her “internship” into the field of consulting. As a treating physician from 1970-1999, Dr. Thomson gave over 500 depositions on behalf of her patients in which she always qualified as an expert. Dr. Thomson was deposed by both sides, usually defense. She testified more than 75 times in trial. She has been involved as an expert in malpractice and worker's comp cases, but more so in personal injury cases. |
